Observations from Somewhere Only We Know
Some things are simply too beautiful to rush past.
A ribbon of golden light spilling across the Sandhills at first light. Cattle grazing beneath a wide-open sky. The silhouette of a windmill against a fading sunset. A fleeting moment when the clouds, the grasses, and the light seem to fall into perfect harmony.
These are the moments that make me pull over, grab my camera, and take a little longer to look.
Welcome to Field Notes, a new chapter in my creative journey as a Nebraska Sandhills artist.
As my work evolves, so does the way I share the places, observations, and little discoveries that inspire it. My paintings have always been about more than what we see. They’re about what we feel—the quiet magic of a landscape, the changing seasons, and those golden moments that remind us to slow down and pay attention.
Here, I’ll be sharing photographs from my explorations across the Sandhills, along with stories, observations, and occasional detours along the way. You might find a sunrise worth getting up early for, an unexpected encounter with wildlife, a familiar stretch of country looking entirely different in a new season, or simply a small detail that caught my eye.
Some outings will lead to a painting. Others may lead nowhere in particular—and that’s perfectly fine with me. Not every beautiful thing needs to become something. Sometimes, it’s enough to notice it, remember it, and share it with someone else.
Field Notes is an invitation to look a little closer.
It’s a companion to my evolving collection, Somewhere Only We Know, where the open skies, rolling grasses, wildlife, and golden hours of the Nebraska Sandhills find their way onto my canvas through expressive brushwork and open impressionism.
Think of these pages as a field journal from the places that inspire me: part landscape, part storytelling, and part reminder that wonder is often hiding in plain sight.
So, whether you know the Sandhills by heart or are discovering them for the first time, I’m glad you’re here.
Take a breath. Stay awhile. And the next time the light catches your eye, I hope you’ll stop for a moment, too.
You never know what you might discover.
